Greetings, terrific K/1 parents! I can't believe that Friday, February 12th will be our hundredth day of school! I can't believe we will have had 100 days in the Hive! Keep those collections coming in! The kids are loving them!
A Few Reminders:
On Thursday, February 11th there will be a Valentine Dinner at Who Song and Larry's at 6:30pm. Tickets are $23 per person and include dinner, dessert and beverage. Tax and tip are also included. There will be games, prizes and entertainment as well.
Free Child care will be provided at the daycare at 6pm. There will be a sign up sheet in the foyer if you are interested, and if you will need child care.
We started something new in The Hive this week! I took the vocabulary words from an additional text in our reading lesson and wrote them down. Whenever the kids caught me saying the word or used the word in context, they got a tally next to it! We will continue to explore additional vocabulary and I plan on sharing the week's vocabulary list so you can listen for your child using them in a sentence or using them yourself to see if they catch you! You will be able to send me a little note (either with your child or via text/email) and I will add a tally to our list!
We could use a few helpers in The Hive on Friday, February 12th. That is our 100-Days-of-School Celebration (in the morning from 9:00-11:00 am), and for our Valentine's Party will be in the afternoon from 1:45-2:45 pm. If you would like to be bring a treat or help out, please let me know.
Here is a list of names for Valentines:
Noah Evaleen Veronica Dante Addison Matthew Wyatt Makenna Grace
Aiden Sammy Hadley Nyahana
Next week we will be busy little bees in The Hive! We will be focusing on "adding in any order" in math, or doing what I like to call "turn arounds", or the beginning of "number families". For example: 9+2=11 is the same as 2+9=11.
The Math Minute this coming week is grouping coins in different ways to equal a dollar, emphasizing that a dollar is worth one-hundred cents!
Coming Up in Reading:
The bees have been working their hearts out! They continue to do research on their animals for our animal reports. They have been reading our reading text and practicing their sight words and spelling words everyday. They started practicing math facts out loud (getting ready for partner practice) and a timed math-facts page. The bees have been working on solving story problems in many ways and explaining why their answers are reasonable. They have been focusing on the long "o" sound (as in the word mole). In addition, the busy bees cast a vote making a prediction about whether or not Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow or not. They compared the voting results on a graph. It seems that most of the bees were hoping for an early Spring!

In Bible we will continue to study about Elijah and our memory verse this week is Psalm 25:4:

We drew names of residents at The Hamptons Senior Center and wrote them special Valentines. We are sending them with Ms. Jones' class for their upcoming visit!
